the facebook effect
i'm heavy into facebook at the moment, as my friends and colleagues are all wrapped up in social networking software. there's a field in facebook where you can type in your "status." when i first joined facebook my friends were putting boring things into their status updates, like "xxx is at work," "xxx is hungry," or "xxx is sick." as time has worn on my friends are getting more creative with their entries. they're doing silly things like only using song lyrics from a particular band to update their statuses. it's much more entertaining now.
facebook status updates are having a curious effect on me, though. i'm now starting to mentally update my own status even when i'm not logged into facebook. i'll be sitting on the couch and this will pop into my head, "photo_re really wishes tivo would stop trying to get me to click on their advertising button." it's like i'm thinking about myself in the third person, almost. it's creeping me out. "photo_re is creeped out." see?
