why surfers run

we've seen this a lot: we'll be sitting in a cafe on the boardwalk and a surfer will run by. why does he run? the sand isn't hot yet and they're not late for anything but waves. dave talked to a surfer and was told that surfers run because they're excited to get out in the water. is this true? any surfers out there?
